What is a Lesson?

A lesson is a very dynamic and powerful module in Moodle.  It is a way of delivering content with student accountability for understanding the content delivered.  It can do this by providing information on each page of the lesson and by asking questions of students at any stage as they progress through the content.

If you are familiar with the book and quiz module of Moodle, a lesson is sort of like a blend  of these two modules.  The delivery of content is very similar to how a book is set up.  You can allow for a list of pages on the left or you can simply have students advance through by clicking a button.  It is like a quiz because students are given a grade for a lesson based on how well they answer questions that are at any stage of the lesson.  These questions can be multiple choice, true/false, short answer, numeric, or essay.

In a lesson there are two types of pages.  There are Question Pages where students will have to make a choice in order to move on, and there are also what are called Branch Tables.  These are pages that merely have content.

The lesson has the potential to deliver content in an interesting and flexible way. Depending on the student's choice of answer when they are on a question page, they either progress to the next page or are taken back to a previous page. Navigation through the lesson can be straight forward or complex, depending largely on the structure of the material being presented.
