Inquiry-based Learning

Inquiry-based learning is a student-centered active learning approach focusing on questioning, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It's associated with the idea "involve me and I understand." from educapes-Teacher Tap

The San Diego Unified School District (i21) Interactive Classroom is an engaging interconnected learning environment designed to optimize student access and participation by integrating audio, visual, mobile computing and formative assessment technologies across the curriculum.

These classrooms are designed to be 21st century learning environments coupled with ongoing teacher professional development that:

  • creates opportunity for new learning practices that will support the teaching and learning of 21st century skill outcomes;
  • allows all students to become expert learners in relevant, real world 21st century contexts (e.g., through project-based or other applied work);
  • provides 21st century architectural and interior designs for group, team and individual learning, and;
  • provides universal design in quality learning tools and technology resources.
    adapted from Partnership for 21st Century Skills

Universal design is embodied in the work of the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) and their Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principals.

Note- Shown above is Pat Fulke and his 5th grade class using a document camera. This is a good example of how the document camera, video projector and large screen can be used to visually present lessons and demonstrate UDL principles for all students in the classroom. It should also be noted that Pat is using a wireless microphone with amplification to four ceiling mounted speakers in the room. Safe to say, all students can see and hear their teacher from any location in the room.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

"Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all. UDL mirrors the universal design movement in architecture and product development. Think of speakerphones, curb cuts, and close-captioned television—all universally designed to accommodate a wide variety of users, including those with disabilities."
from CAST

This site presents a professional development overview for teachers seeking UDL resources and strategies.
Our goal is to assist teachers develop instructional methods to work with all students within a flexible curriculum. To build flexibility, our teachers will use a variety of digital tools to create curricula materials that provide access, engagement and achievement to a diverse group of learners in the classroom.

Three Principles

UDL principles help educators customize their teaching for individual differences in each of these three brain networks. A universally-designed curriculum offers the following:

Multiple means of representation to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge;

Multiple means of expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and;

Multiple means of engagement to tap into learners' interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn.

Differentiated Instruction

"To differentiate instruction is to recognize students' varying background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning and interests, and to react responsively. Differentiated instruction is a process to teaching and learning for students of differing abilities in the same class. The intent of differentiating instruction is to maximize each student's growth and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is, and assisting in the learning process." From CAST
