On  Wednesday, November 18 our class would like to prepare a Thanksgiving feast.  We will need the children to bring in the needed items.  We will also need about 2 parents on Tuesday, November 17, (7:45 to about 9:45)  to help them make individual pumpkin pies and to bake them at home and send them back on Wednesday.  We will need about 3 parents on Wednesday to help them prepare beef stew and set up for the feast from 7:45 to 9:30.

If you would be willing to send something in or if you have time to help cook, we’d really appreciate it.  Please circle any item you might like to donate from the following list and Mrs. Walsingham will coordinate our efforts.  Thanks so much.

Homework

Homework this month will continue pretty much the same.  We will be taking off the Reading Logs and adding "Books and Beyond" slips.  This will help the children get their Gold Medals as well as satisfying classroom reading requirements.

I would like to encourage the children to choose some good grade level literature for at least half of their home reading.  Its always fun to read easy books too, but a good mixture is probably best for reading improvement.

Language Arts

Last month we  read several informational books on spiders.  We are just completing a compare and contrasting three paragraph essay on what we have learned.  We have also looked at adjectives, good questions readers ask to improve comprehension, and word analogies. We also looked at the folktales using the spider, Anansi.  We also read Two Bad Ants.

In November we are studying informational literature on the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.  We will write an essay on what we learn.  We will also be looking at biographies and doing a biography report, and reading a historical fiction novel, Molly's Pilgrim.  We will be completing a committee report comparing the characters in the book.

Mathematics

In math we have completed the unit on multiplication facts, although we will revisit memorizing these facts much of the year.  We are now in a unit on place value.  We will be learning expanded notation and how to write big numbers up the 99,000.  We will also look at value and deciding which numbers are bigger than others.  We will then go into addition and subtraction using four digit numbers.

SCIENCE

In science we have completed Investigations 1 and 2 on the sun, shadows and the moon.  The children have charted the moon phases in class and have kept a moon calendar at home.  We are in the process of creating a "Space Race" timeline on the great space race during the 1960s and 1970s between Russia and the U.S.  We will then begin our final unit of Space--the stars.

Globe Social Studies

In Social Studies, the children have begun to study the four regions--the desert, the mountains, the canyons, and the seashore.  We will be taking a fieldtrip to Mission Trails park.  Children may want to consider bringing a camera to take pictures of plants and animals for the Earth Appreciation Project.  They will be hiking and looking for both plants and animals of the region and how the local Indians survived with the resources.

.

Art this month should be fun.  We have decorated our windows with Scarecrows and are creating a mural on Plymouth Plantation, as we look at the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.  We are also creating a Space Race Timeline.  We will design woven placemats for Thanksgiving and will beginnin a clay project that hopefully will be a holiday gift to their parents.

I am a native San Diegan. I went to school at the area schools of Hearst, Lewis, and Hoover (Patrick Henry didn't exist yet!!) I graduated from San Diego State with a degree in Social Sciences and an elementary teaching credential and later got my Master's Degree in Curriculum from there also.

Personally, I am married to a retired teacher (you'll often see him volunteering in our room) and I have three children, and three step-children (two sets of twins!!) Our children are grown and we live in Fletcher Hills.
