| We are continuing with Unit 6. In this Unit (titled Why Tell Stories? ) the students will explore, analyze, and discuss themes, plots and characters to understand traditional literature from around the world. In language, the students will explore and use a variety of problem solving strategies to read, write and talk about text: descriptive language (adjectives, verb choice, synonyms, and antonyms). In writing, there will be lessons on narratives (twisted tale, fable) and responses to literature (personal letter recommending a traditional tale).

| These last few weeks in Math will focus on measurement, perimeter, area, surface area and volume, as well as data, graphing and probablity. Please keep working at home on elapsed time. You can make up all kinds of questions i.e. bed time to breakfast, dismissal from school to end of soccer practice, etc. Elapsed time (how much time is between 8:30a.m.. and 11:00 a.m. etc. ) is a very difficult concept and one that students still need to understand and practice.

| These next few weeks will be major in our classroom world of science as we focus on our last unit of study which is Life Science. This unit is my personal favorite as the students will experience four investigations dealing with observable characteristics of organisms. They will learn to how some structures function in growth and survival. Not only are your children experiencing hydroponics's in plant growth, but life growth in animals as well. This means that we will have "critters" in our classroom. There will be silkworms, egg hatching, snail studies, crayfish and (the most exciting) dissection of squid. Trust me...if your child doesn't like science...that will change (big time) in the coming weeks!

| We are beginning a new unit of Government focusing on why we need laws and leaders, what laws and leaders do, and how citizens help government. We will be finishing off the year with a study of the 3 branches of Government and economics.

We have just finished a study on Claude Monet's water lilies and a Fathers Day gift art project (sorry that's all I can tell you ). However, the Monet's lesson impressionistic artwork is posted on our windows so take a peek at your child's handiwork. Our next formal art lesson with Ms. Pat Johns will be scheduled for May. Thanks to the Foundation, we will be given six art lessons with this wonderful and talented art teacher throughout the year. Ms. Johns is famous for incorporating art history, literature and classical art into each and every lesson and it is in great anticipation that we await her visits.

Homework will be a little different this month. There will be no homeword or spelling tests for the two weeks of testing. After that the homework will resume. As a side note, I am very please with the quality of work done on the Earth Day reports. Your child worked hard and I am very impressed! Thank you for the support in time spent for an experience that hopefully will be remembered with fondness.
