What's Up
We are studying Integers this week.
Integers are positive and negative numbers.

Students will need to know how to order/compare integers.
Negatives- the closer the negative is to zero the larger it's value so the farther away the negative is to zero the smaller it's value.
Positives- the closer the positive is to zero the smaller it's value so the farther away the positive is to zero the larger it's value.
Remember that negatives work in the opposite way of positives.

Students will need to know how to add & subtract integers.
ADDITION
positive + positive = positive
negative + negative = negative

negative + positive = subtract the smallest # from the largest and give the sign of the largest number to the answer
(25 + ^-35 = ^-10, so 35 - 25 = 10, ^-35 was the largest number so put the negative symbol on the 10, thus the answer is ^-10)

SUBTRACTION
positive - negative = larger positive (add the opposite)
negative - positive = larger negative (add the opposite)

negative - negative = either a smaller negative or a positive
(Always move to the right on a number line or toward the positives.
You will have less negatives.)
positive - positive = either a smaller positive or a negative
(Always move to the left on a number line or toward the negatives.
You will have less positives.)

What's Up
We will be writing our own narrative after Thanksgiving break. We will be using Write Up a Storm with the Polk Street School. In it Patricia Reilly Giff teaches kids how she wrote her famous series, The Polk Street School.
We are learning about them we are working on how to make our writing better through the use of prepositions and appositives. We have explored transitions already.
Appositives: a noun or noun phrase that names another noun
Example: Billy, a great ballplayer, made it to the pros.
Commas are used to separate it from the rest of the sentence. It
can be inserted or taken out.
Preposition: words that begin phrases that add detail to sentences. They usually deal with location or time.
Examples: After recess, the students will have an art lesson.
The students crawled under their desks during the earthquake drill. (2 prep phrases)
The basic sentence is the one left after the phrases are taken out.
